For every forecourt in the current file, the straight-line distance to the nearest other forecourt — as the crow flies, not as anybody drives. Most of the country is crowded. A few hundred forecourts are not, and the last of them is a ferry ride from its nearest competitor.

Each forecourt counted once, in the band its own nearest neighbour falls in. Beside each band, the median petrol e10 price of the forecourts in it that published one — the count of those is the column next to it, because a median without its own denominator is the figure this site exists not to print.

The crowded bands agree and the far one does not. A forecourt with another inside a mile and one between one and five miles carry the same median to the tenth of a penny; past ten miles the median is 177.9p, which is 6.0p above the crowded band. That is 32 published prices, so it is a small sample and a large gap. It is also mostly islands — the forecourts at the bottom of this page are Scilly, Tiree, Colonsay, Barra and Shetland, where fuel arrives by boat. We report the distance and the price. Why they differ is not something the file says, and we do not guess.

8,108 of the 8,114 forecourts in the current file. The other 6 are not distant, they are unplaceable: 5 have a coordinate this archive refuses to publish because it contradicts the forecourt's own postcode, and 1 carry no coordinate at all. They are excluded from every figure above and counted here, because a data-quality decision of ours must never arrive on a page as a fact about the market.

Distances are great-circle miles between the coordinates the retailers published — as the crow flies. This site computes no routes and no drive times, so a forecourt on the far side of an estuary counts as near even where the road is an hour. The search has no radius: every forecourt is measured against every other one in the file until its nearest is found, which is what makes the last band possible at all.
