Prices that cannot be true

Retailers submit prices in three different units — pounds, pence and tenths of a penny — and we convert them all to pence. A converted value outside 50p to 400p cannot be a pump price, so we record that it failed the check and keep the row exactly as it arrived. Nothing here is corrected or removed: a repaired price would be a price we invented.

Every one of these is ours, not the retailer’s.A forecourt submitting 10.41 has published a number; the 1041p beside it is what our own conversion made of it, because a value under 50 is treated as pounds and multiplied by a hundred with nothing checking the result afterwards. Both figures are shown so the difference is visible rather than asserted.

These reached us through a third-party archive rather than from the retailer, so they say nothing about the forecourt named beside them — 29 of the 33 are in this class.

514,360 of these records were written before we began storing the verdict alongside the price, and the archive is never rewritten. The same check is applied to them when this page is built, so the counts above cover every record — but only 152,749 carry a verdict recorded at the moment they arrived.

Two published prices that disagree

52 forecourts publish a super unleaded price below their own regular unleaded. Both figures are ordinary prices and neither fails the check above — they simply cannot both be what the pumps charge. We do not know which is wrong, or that either is, so both are printed as published.
